2. FORMALIC (IL)LITERACY
• LITERACY: Proficient.
• ILLITERACY: Incompetent.
3. SEMANTIC (IL)LITERACY
• LITERACY: "I can use my A-B-C's and numerals to read and write them -- as words and numbers, too!"
• ILLITERACY: "I can read and write my A-B-C's and numerals. But I don't understand words and numbers."
4. PRAGMATIC (IL)LITERACY
• LITERACY: "I know how what I read affects me!"
• ILLITERACY: "I wish I knew how what I read affects me!"

5. TRANSACTIC (IL)LITERACY
• LITERACY: Understands how literature relates to other sign-users.
• ILLITERACY: Understand how literature relates to self but not other sign users.
