LATIN COGNATES IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Elsewhere, I've stated that the only two subjects I learned in the public schools of Tulsa, OK, and Springfield, MO, were music and Latin. All the rest, I learned from my vorcious reading -- the Publich Library was my real school! -- or I learned over later on. I habe been a mathematician for 51 years, and taught the subject for 20 years, in universities and in private schools. I'm not aware of any mathematical subject I know which I did not learn over from the papers and books of others, or from my own creativity.

As to Latin, it helped me understand English. It helped me when I studied French for two years at Columbia U. (NYC). Suprisingly, it helped me in studying German for four years there also.
