THE WORSHIP OF CHARLES DARWIN (1809-62)
Ths worship is blemished by at least four exposures:
Darwin had no "mechanism" for "operating Evolution". He attributed inheritance via the
blood. But you can see how silly this is by pouring a few drops of colored liquid into a tub
of water: it is soon diffused so much as never to be "effective". Only particulate, protected
means would suffice. Ignoring this critical part of Darwin's theory is comparable to praising
Leonardo da Vinci for his "flying machine". Leonardo created a glider with no engine. A great
accomplishment, but should not be overestimated. Gregor Mendel (1822-84) and Hugo De Vries
(1848-1935) supplied the "engine" for "Darwin's glider" -- particulate chromosomes, protected
in the sex cells of the body for transmission via reproduction.
Darwin never acknowledge that biologist Edward Blyth (1810-73) postulated the basic ideas
of evolutionary theory in a paper published 6 months before Darwin returned on the "The
Beagle" from the Galápagos Archipelago, to start his evolutionary research. Darwin praised
other work of Blyth. And Darwin referenced a paper appearing in the same journal next to Blyth's
paper. Also Darwin began for the first time to use a technical term after it appeared in
Blyth's paper, and examples cited in some of Darwin's work first appeared in Blyth's two papers
on evolutionary theory. (Students have been accused of plagiarism on similar grounds. See
Darwin and The Mysterious Mr. X, by Loren Eisley, the distinguished American palaeontologist
and science essayist.)
Independently wealthy, reclusive Darwin was said to have subscribed to all biological journals
published during his creative years, so Darwin should have seen Mendel's paper, which eventually
resulted in a critical revision of evolutionary theory. But Darwin never mentioned Mendel in any
way.
I've compiled a list of 16 versions of evolutionary theory, changing over the decades --
including its mathematization by G. H. Hardy, J. B. S. Haldane, and Sir Ronald Fisher (raising
some of this science to the level of what, elsewhere at this Website, I call "SCIENCEFIRSTCLASS")
-- so that this science is now critically different from Darwin's conception. (Anent the latter
point, please see, at this Website, "Ignored Language Abuses".)
