Many years ago Robert Paul Smith wrote a very funny book, Translations from the Engish, dealing with what people say, but really mean. The wife says, "I'm not mad!" Translation: "I'm mad!"
Boy says: "Wah! Sister hit me!" Translation: "I hit sister, and she hit me back!"
Boy says to father: "All the kids at school have one!" Translation" "The bank president's son has one."
And this could be one of them: "All the kids do it!" SCD translation: "I have no excuse for what I'm doing."
This is the standard "excuse" of politicians and office-holders and business leaders and journalists.
