THE BURNING OF THE GREAT LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA

A few days after the assassination of Hypatia (see an accompanyiing file), a Christian mob burned down this greatest library of ancient times.

Among other "gems", it contained the works of Archmidedes(x-y) and of Eudoxus (c. 408-355 BC), two of the greatest mathematicians of ancient times.

We have little extant of Archimedes. And know of the work of Eudoxus only from commentaries and the edited text of the Fifth Book of Eudlid's Elements of Geometry.
