The general public know Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) as the founder of military nursing during the Crimean War (1854-6). While there, Nightingale initiated the military allotment system. After "retirement" in England, Nightingale's statistical work helped initiate "the welfare state" (social security, etc.). As a young woman, Nightingale was tutored by Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897), one of the greatest mathematicians in history, who later said she was the best of all his students. Nightingale said, "Every one should study statistics to learn God's plan for the Universe."
