PERSONAL NOTE ON LINEAR PROGRAMMING

Our son, Tim, is a professional musician and academic. We bought him a catalog-store electric bass when he was 14. He picked up Rock&Roll and played in many groups, including one which he managed after reaching 20.

Tim then learn to play jazz and became the student of the late Stephens Brewster, Principal Bassist for The National Symphony Orchestra -- learning classical music. Brewster recommended Tim for a scholarship at James Madison University, Fredericksburg, VA, the music school of Virginia.

While an undergraduate, the University Jazz Ensemble (in which Tim played "acoustic" string bass) won National First Prize at Newport, R. I.

After receiving his B.A. in Music Education, Tim went on to earn his M.B.A.

In 1982, I was able to advise Tim in using linear programming to model music scheduling, which won for him a National First Prize in an Academic Competition.

The next year (1983), this was a factor in Tim's appointment as Head of the Music Business Department of Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, IL.

Later Tim became Head of the entire Music Department. Tim also plays in a large swing band at Chicago gigs.
