The American mathematician, Norbert Wiener (x-y), in 1948, published a classic book, CYBERNETICS, a word he invented for the theory behind AUTOMATION. (The attribution to "cyberworld"to a scifi writer is typical of public and media illiteracy.) Wiener singled out INFORMATION and CONTROL. I've a website entitled: "ALTERNATIVE TO SLAVERY: COMPUTERS AND AUTOMATION". I was inspired by Wiener's popular treatment of CYBERNETICS, The Human Use of Human Beings.
So, we have our cyber-slaves -- freeing humans to live and work like humans -- because of INFORMATION and CONTROL. And behind the latter is a mathematical concept, ORDER, which is "made for trafgrafing".
There is only ONE CONDITION for an ORDER-STRUCTURE: TRANSITIVITY. And TRANSITIVE CLOSURE is the essential of INFORMATION and CONTROL. I can easily graph TRANSITIVITY by using three different COLORED ARROWS for THREE PATHWAYS: Given ÞÞ and given also Þ Þ then TRANSITIVITY means Þ ÞÞ
Here's am "everyday" way of understanding transitivity (the criterion of ORDER, hence, of INFORMATION and CONTROL). If, starting at Main Street and First ASvenue, you can walk direclty along Main Street to Second Avenue, and then walk directly along Main Street to Third Avenue, then you known it is possible to walk directly along Main Street from First Avenue to Third Avenue. Dig?
For INFORMATION, you often need a PATH from one INFO-BIT to ANOTHER. The full COMPLETION may be done by many PATHS. ThE MINIMAL PATH is known as TRANSITIVE CLOSURE. In general, it is subtle to verify. But there is an ALGORITHM to do so.
The case is similar for CONTROL. TRANSITIVE CLOSURE determines THE MINIMAL PATH for CONTROL.
Transitivity in communication is critical. Reports now appearing in newspapers and on TV say that the CIA and FBI have not been, and are not now, communicating well with each other, each side complaining about the other. If you set up a network, some one should write a program which tests your network every day to see if every node is contacted and responds. Also a procedure that checks to see if every person on the network understood messages and responded appropriately. Presumably those with past military service, especially the Navy ("Now, hear this!"), can advise on these matters.
Another transitive problem concerns failure of transiting by emigrants entering U. S. on work or education visas. Some of the persons suspected of complicity in the Twin Towers desruction of Sept. 11, 2001, entered on just such visas, but never showed up at the workplace or the schools they claimed to being going to.
