In Crotona, Pythagoras and wife Theano FOUNDED THE WORLD'S FIRST UNIVERSITY. (It was coeducational!)In doing so, Pythagoras FOUNDED THE LIBERAL ARTS PROGRAM, with the first four LIBERAL ARTS:
So, all the original LIBERAL ARTS were MATHEMATICAL. (In the Middle Ages, to this "Quadrium of the Liberal Arts", was adjoined "The Trivium of the Liberal Arts" -- Grammar, y, Rhetoric ("Language Arts") -- constituting "The Seven Liberal Arts".)
- MATHEMATICS;
- GEOMETRY;
- HARMONY (laws of tuning strings and pipes);
- ASTRONOMY (similarity geometry, for locating celestial bodies).
Pythagoras created the term, "mathematics", as mathemata, meaning "studies". (We've already noted that Pythagoras created the term, "philosophy", for "love of wisdom".)
