Ophelia, have you noticed the poverty of our language for LOVE? If we cared enough, wouldn't we develop our language?Perhaps, what bugs me most is the constant use of "sssssexxxxxxxxxx" for erotic love, although we sometimes speak of "making love".
We ask, "Is it sssssexxxxxxxxxx, or is it love?" I'd say, "Is it erotic love or philial love", where the latter term derives from the Greek "philia" for "love of", as in "Francophile" for "love of France or French culture". (The word "philia" must not be confused with the Latin "filial" for role-playing as a "son".) Philial love is friendship.
Yes, Hamlet, to correct some of this linguistic poverty, I created the term "varilove", for "the various forms of love". In particular, I single out four primary forms:
- SELFLOVE or EGOISM
- EROTIC LOVE
- PHILIAL LOVE (FRIENDSHIP)
- ALTRUISM (AGAPE)
And a HOMOLOGY enlightens here. (In another file, "homology", is used for "ethicalling".)
Modern physics recognizes FOUR BASIC FORCES or INTERACTIONS:
- GRAVITATIONAL
- WEAK (in RADIATION)
- ELECTROMAGNETIC
- STRONG (binding ATOMIC NUCLEUS)
An ANTITONIC RELATION characterizes them: THE STRONGEST FORCE (STRONG) HAS THE LEAST RANGE; THE WEAKEST (GRAVITY) HAS THE GREATEST RANGE.
Similarly, THE STRONGEST LOVE (SELFLOVE/EGOISM) HAS THE LEAST RANGE; THE WEAKEST (ALTRUISM/AGAPE) HAS THE GREATEST RANGE.
Hence, the HOMOLOGY =>
SELFLOVE/EGOISM : EROTIC LOVE : PHILIAL LOVE/FRIENDSHIP : ALTRUISM/AGAPE ::
GRAVITY : WEAK : ELECTROMAGNETIC : STRONG.(Hymn Tune: "To Be a Pilgrim") You, who decisions daunt; You, who dread Action; Fretting the "Fairest Choice", "The Right Transaction": Take pilgrim staff and rod, The stony pathway trod; The Objectable Mountains trod To be Love's Pilgrim! When Dread Decisions scower, Precipice looming; When Fearlove bids you cower, Night shades Love's blooming: Place staff down, resolute; Varilove shout salute! Trail trek on Love's Pursuit, Grail of Love's Pilgrim. When Varilove plays host To Pilgrim, weary; Takes nothing for the cost, Bids farewell, cheery, This promise make, to pay Love's kindness on the way. You'll love and create all day For all Love's Pilgrims.
